Summer Safety Checklist for Your Garage

July 6, 2017/in Uncategorized/by Blue Sky Builders

Summer weather represents a perfect opportunity to get outdoors. If you are like many homeowners, the summertime means that you will be spending an increased amount of time in your garage. While you may believe that you have gone to all necessary lengths to ensure that your garage is as risk-free as it can be, there could be safety hazards in the garage. It is likely that your garage is where you store a wide variety of potentially hazardous items, and it is important to address any situations which present a risk to those who enter the area. Featured below are tips that you can use to keep yourself safe as you spend the summer months in your favorite workspace.

Store tools in secure locations

While it may seem obvious, it is important to make sure that all of your tools are stored in a secure location in your garage and out of the reach of children. An easy way to do this is by placing them in a storage unit with a lock on it that keeps them off of the floor and out of harm’s way.

Check that all electrical power in your garage is grounded

Many people put electrical equipment such as refrigerators and stereos in their garages despite the fact that garages are very likely to get wet, which can put garage owners at risk of being electrocuted. A good way to avoid this kind of risk is to make sure that all electrical circuits in your garage are grounded.

Maintain your garage door

Getting injured by garage doors is one of the most common ways to get hurt while in a garage because of the many different parts involved in the construction of these doors. Make sure to maintain your garage door and ensure that all springs, brackets, anchors, pulleys, and hinges are in working order.

Clearly mark all stairs or steps

Typically, garage floors are made of concrete, so anybody who happens to slip and stumble to the ground in a garage is at risk of serious injury. While it is difficult to prevent all situations in which somebody may fall, clearly marking all stairs and lifts in your garage is a great way to reduce the likelihood of an injury.
