Heating Your Garage in the Cold Winter Months

February 21, 2025/in Custom Garages/by Blue Sky Builders

Heating Your Garage in the Cold Winter Months With temperatures dropping across the United States, many people are wondering how they can keep their garages at least semi-warm. Americans tend to use their garages for much more than parking a car inside. Some garages are now offices for those who work at home, some are fitness centers, some are family rooms, and some have been transformed into a mother-in-law space. All of these uses of garage space require that the garage be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Since many garages have little insulation and no source of heat, this can be a problem.

There are a variety of ways to make your garage space cozy and warm during the coldest months. A licensed Chicago area garage-building and repair expert from Blue Sky Builders, Inc. can help you determine the best way to insulate and heat your garage. We have been in the garage door business for more than 45 years; our company was founded in 1979, and we have consistently provided service to more than 50 communities in the western, northern, and southern suburbs, as well as in the Chicago area. We can help you replace your old garage windows, add a steel entry door, update the siding and roofing on your garage, or replace your garage door.

Insulating Your Garage

Your first consideration will be insulation. Before you insulate, go around the interior of your garage with low-expansion spray foam, sealing every gap and crack. Weatherstrip the bottom of the garage door, the windows in the garage, and the door frames to completely seal off drafts. There are five different types of insulation that can be used in garages, each with its own pros and cons. These include:

  • Fiberglass insulation is the most commonly used type because it is easy to handle and relatively inexpensive, but it is vulnerable to moisture.
  • Cellulose insulation is generally used for holes and cavities, is fire resistant and environmentally friendly, but requires drywall and can be expensive.
  • Rigid foam insulation is fairly affordable, reduces noise, and can be good for thin walls and garage doors, but it must be precisely cut to fit.
  • Spray foam is airtight, mold and insect-resistant, and energy-efficient, but it is more expensive and must usually be installed by professionals.
  • Garage door insulation usually comes in a kit for standard door sizes, adding stability, noise reduction, and durability to your garage door. The added weight of the insulation can wear out older springs, so it is a good idea to speak with a knowledgeable garage door expert.

Choosing a Heater for Your Garage

While electric space heaters are often used in garages because they produce no harmful emissions and are generally considered safe, they can be expensive if you spend a lot of time in your garage. Larger garages could benefit from a forced-air garage heater, which is easy to install and use and has thermostats to adjust the heat level and the direction of the heat.

For those who use their garage space as a fitness area, home office, or crafting area, an infrared garage heater might be the best option because infrared heaters do not kick up dust or keep dust airborne, like other heaters do. If your garage shares a wall with your home, you may be able to extend your central air and heat into the garage, although this definitely requires the services of a professional heating and air company.

When choosing a garage heater, make sure it is sized correctly for your garage area. If you live in a humid area, running a heater could increase condensation levels in your garage, so you may have to use a dehumidifier to avoid mold and rust. If your garage windows are older and let in cold air, you should consider replacing them or installing thermal curtains to further insulate your space and reduce heat loss.

Converting Your Garage into a Home Gym

January 30, 2025/in Custom Garages/by Blue Sky Builders

Converting Your Garage into a Home GymSome garages actually house a vehicle or two, while many others seem to be the catch-all for everything a family has no room for inside the house. In the past few years, however, more and more families have turned their garages into highly usable spaces that fit their lifestyles. Some will use the entire garage space, while others will divide a two or three-car garage so that part of it can still be used to protect a vehicle.

Some garages have been turned into home offices for those who work from home. Others are turned into a family room or playroom or are updated for highly practical yet stylish storage areas. As more and more people strive to stay healthy, they may find that gym membership is just not practical. This has resulted in many homeowners deciding to turn their garages into home gyms and fitness areas.

If you have made the decision to convert your garage into a home gym, one of the best decisions you can make is to call a licensed Downer’s Grove, IL garage-building and repair expert from Blue Sky Builders, Inc.. With 45 years of service to more than 50 communities in the Chicago area, we can help you replace old garage windows, update garage siding and roofing, and add an attractive steel entry door to your new fitness center.

Assess Your Needs

Your first step should be to assess your needs. Will your converted garage gym be only for you, for you and your spouse, or for an entire family? Depending on your square footage, you may need to maximize your use of space to the extent possible. Will the gym have stationary bicycles, a treadmill, and a rowing machine? What about free weights? Create a floor plan after taking measurements of the area – and measurements of the equipment you have or the equipment you plan to purchase. Take note of electrical outlets, doors, and windows to maximize your space.

Consider Comfort, Accessibility, and Security

Most garages have very little insulation. You will need to add additional insulation to the garage door, the ceiling, and the walls. There are many types of insulation, including spray foam, woven, fiberglass batting, and bubble insulation. Your ultimate goals are to block all drafts, control moisture, create a sound barrier, and keep your fitness center warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

After you have added insulation, you will need heating and cooling units to ensure good temperature control. Mini-split systems work well in smaller spaces as they are energy efficient while controlling heat and humidity, and some units can help ventilate your space if there are no windows. If you still need a certain amount of storage space and your garage has a high ceiling, you can potentially add a storage loft.

Be aware of headroom. You want to ensure you have enough space above you when you raise your arms or rebound on a mini-trampoline. A high-lift garage door conversion can allow the garage door to open at a higher level, closer to the ceiling. A wall-mounted garage door opener can also add security features like notifications sent to your smartphone to indicate the status of the garage door and PosiLock to keep the door down and monitor against forced entry.

Consider Flooring

A cold concrete floor may not be what you want for your home gym. You could consider epoxy flooring, which is applied over a concrete floor and comes in a wide array of colors and patterns. Epoxy flooring can also have an additive that makes it non-slip, which is important in a gym. Some people choose rubber mats for their fitness area or foam tiles, which are easier on exercisers’ knees. Add your personal touches – a sound system, television, dorm refrigerator, photos, water cooler – and your home gym is ready to be enjoyed.

Converting a Junk-Filled Garage into a Functional Office Space

January 8, 2025/in Custom Garages/by Blue Sky Builders

Converting a Junk-Filled Garage into a Functional Office SpaceWorking from home began during the pandemic, but for many, working from home continued long after the pandemic ended. While some workers simply carved out a small space in their home for a work area, others looked for creative ways to create a true office space. Unused guest bedrooms, oversized closets, attic or basement areas, and rarely used garages all become fair game for a dedicated office.

If your garage is currently packed with dusty boxes and tools, you may doubt that it could ever be turned into a comfortable office space. All it takes is a little cash, some hard work, and a dash of imagination to convert your garage into the office space of your dreams. Replacing your old garage windows is an important part of the process, as is replacing your entry door with a new steel entry door system.

A Downers’ Grove, IL garage-building and repair expert can help you create a home office that you will use for years to come. At Blue Sky Builders, Inc., we have over 45 years of experience in virtually every facet of garage building, repair, and reimagining of the space. Our superior work ethic has made our company an A+ Rated Member of the Better Business Bureau.

What Are the Benefits of Having a Home Office in Your Garage?

If you routinely work from home, you may be fully aware of the many distractions you face. Having a separate office space allows you to focus on your work without the noise and chaos that many homes have in abundance. When distractions are out of sight, productivity often increases dramatically. A home office also saves you from a hectic daily commute, leaving you much less stressed when your work is done.

Should You Convert the Entire Garage or Just a Portion of It?

Your first decision will be whether to convert your entire garage into a home office or only a part of it. Perhaps you want to retain the option of parking your car in the garage or need additional storage space. Ultimately, your decision will depend on the size of your garage and your needs.

The decision could also be influenced by whether your garage is detached from your home or attached. If you have a two-car attached garage, you may choose to use half of it for your new home office and keep the other half for parking your car and shelving for storage. If this is the case, you will need a divider wall built between the two spaces.

Four Considerations for Your Garage-Converted Office Space

While you may already be choosing a fancy desk and an ergonomic office chair, there are a few basics to consider first – after checking on county building regulations – including:

  • Insulation should be one of your first priorities. Most garages are light on insulation because they don’t necessarily need to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Insulation will help you stay comfortable while also adding soundproofing to your office space.
  • Updated flooring will be your next task. A concrete floor may not feel very inviting, but you can consider an epoxy sealer for the concrete or choose warm wood flooring or even carpeting.
  • After insulating and updating your flooring, consider the lighting in your new office space. There are hundreds of choices, including compact fluorescent lights installed around the garage’s perimeter, hanging lights, or even added windows for more natural light.
  • You can’t have an office without a good Wi-Fi connection. If your garage is too far away from your Wi-Fi router or there are very thick walls between the garage and the router, you may need to invest in a Wi-Fi extender, move your home router, or replace it with one that covers a larger area.

Is a Custom Garage or a Prefab Garage Model Best for Me?

December 11, 2024/in Custom Garages/by Blue Sky Builders

Is a Custom Garage or a Prefab Garage Model Best for Me?Every household has different needs when it comes to a garage. You may want a standardized garage that’s “ready to go,” or you might prefer a custom garage built to your specifications. If you’re having trouble coming to a solution, our Downers Grove, IL garage-building and repair experts are prepared to help with any project. Blue Sky Builders, Inc. has been in business for 45 years, providing tailored garage services for homeowners across Chicagoland.

Pros and Cons of a Prefab Garage

Prefab garages, also known as modular or portable garages, are pre-built structures that are transported to your home. They are typically constructed in factories, and might require some assembly before being ready for use on your property. Before you consider investing in a prefab garage, you should weigh the upsides and downsides to see if one would align with your needs.

The most obvious advantage of a prefab garage is convenience. Compared to construction from the ground up, a commercial prefab garage can be set up quickly without much worry about legal specifications. Moreover, when you go shopping for a prefab garage, you will know exactly what it looks like ahead of time, which can lessen some of the anxiety around getting a new garage. Prefabricated garages also tend to be much more budget-friendly compared to the cost of a customized garage.

As for the downsides, a prebuilt garage may not be as stable or durable as a custom garage, and owners of prefab garages may have to pay special attention to the foundation the garage stands on. If you invest in a prefabricated garage, you may find that your options for customizing it are limited – in most cases, what you see is what you get.

Pros and Cons of a Custom Garage

If you have big plans for your garage, you might consider a customized construction. Our garage builders can work with you from start to finish to build a garage from scratch. A custom garage is a highly rewarding venture, but it can also be a significant project, and you should know what you’re getting into before investing in one.

Constructed on a solid foundation fit to your property, one of the biggest draws for a custom garage is its sturdiness. Furthermore, a custom-built garage is less constricted by size since it doesn’t have to be transported, allowing you to make the most of the space on your property. A custom garage can also bump up the value of your house by thousands of dollars, giving you greater returns on a future sale.

A drawback of custom-built garages is that they are often bogged down in permits and warrants. However, our garage-building and repair experts can take care of this on your behalf, making sure that the construction complies with local ordinances.

Three Tips for Renovating Your Garage

December 5, 2024/in Custom Garages/by Blue Sky Builders

Three Tips for Renovating Your GarageIf you’re looking to try something new with your garage space, you might be stumped at where to begin. Up until now, you might have been using it just for car storage or a place to store your tools. But just like any other room in your house, a custom garage can be a space to practice your hobbies or have friends over.

That being said, transforming your garage overnight is no easy feat; the Downers Grove, IL garage-building and repair experts at Blue Sky Builders, Inc. can help you realize your aspirations for your garage. We’re ready to assist at any point during your project, starting with these three practical tips for garage renovation.

Tip #1: Know Your Budget

Figuring out a budget early on can help ground your project with a realistic scope. Depending on how much you want to overhaul, you might want to consider the cost of materials, tools, furnishing, or expert assistance. For instance, stripping the walls of a garage to install new insulation can come with varying price tags depending on the method, whether you want to go with fiberglass batts, spray foam, or foam panels. A budget doesn’t have to account for every possibility–at some point, we all run into unexpected expenses–but having an estimate for the cost will help prevent your project from getting stuck in the weeds.

Tip #2: Have a Timeline in Mind

Renovating a garage can take longer than you might think. Consider how much you rely on your garage every day. Do you need it to accommodate all of the cars in your family’s driveway? Do you use it to protect your car from the elements? While a project is ongoing, you might want to think about how long the project might take, and whether you need it done before a certain deadline.

For example, you might plan to have renovations completed before winter, knowing how vicious a cold January in Chicagoland can be. A garage-building expert at Blue Sky Builders, Inc. can help you work out a realistic timeline for your project based on the amount of work that needs to be done.

Tip #3: Cover Your Bases

Your town or city likely has specific regulations for garage construction, especially detached garages. These mandates might include zoning requirements, height restrictions, permissible types of foundation, and more. If you violate these, you could be fined and ordered to stop any work. Our garage-building experts can take care of the legal work on your behalf and secure a permit for your project.

What is the Difference Between a Gable Garage and a Hip Garage?

November 26, 2024/in Custom Garages/by Blue Sky Builders

What is the Difference Between a Gable Garage and a Hip Garage? When you have a new garage built, you have a lot of decisions to make. You will need to decide whether you want a two or three-car garage, whether you want a manual or electronic garage door opener, and whether you want flood vents installed. Some of this comes down to how you plan to use your garage. You might want different things if you plan to use your garage strictly for parking your cars in, primarily for storage, or as a space for working on projects. One of the decisions you will need to make is whether you want a hip garage or a gable garage. Our experienced Chicago, IL garage-building experts will work with you to design the kind of garage you need.

Gable Garages and Hip Garages Have Different Roofs

The main difference between a gable garage and a hip garage is the roofing. A gable garage’s roof has two sloping sides that meet at a point in the middle, forming a triangle shape. A hip garage has a four-sided roof, where four triangular sides meet at a point in the middle.

Choosing Between a Gable and Hip Garage

If you live in Cook County, IL, you are used to getting a lot of snow each year. The climate you live in is an important factor in deciding what type of roof you need for your garage. Hip garages are usually more wind-resistant and structurally sound, but snow and rain slide off gable garages more easily. Other factors you should consider include:

  • Storage space – Because hip garages usually have taller roofs, they offer more overhead storage space. If you want your garage to have an attic you can use to store things, a hip garage might be for you. If you would prefer a gable or do not want to have to climb a ladder to get your things down, you could consider building a garage with more floor space.
  • Aesthetics – A lot of homeowners want the roof of their garage to match the roof of their house for aesthetic reasons. If you are in a Homeowner’s Association, they may require this or have other rules on what kind of garage you can erect on your lot. As always, your contractor will check all local regulations related to garages.
  • Cost – Gable roofs are less complex and usually less costly to build.

Is Your Garage Ready for Winter?

November 22, 2024/in Custom Garages/by Blue Sky Builders

Is Your Garage Ready for Winter?Garages can be wonderfully convenient during a Chicago winter. When your car is parked inside, you do not have to worry about scraping ice off your windshield every day or digging snow out from around your tires. It is easier to start driving when at least the first foot or two are on concrete before you hit snow. Just as you might winterize your car, like by putting snow tires on it, you should also make sure your garage is ready for winter. If getting your garage prepared to withstand a snowstorm is going to be a big job, an experienced Chicago, IL garage renovation company can help.

Weatherproof the Doors

If your garage is attached to your house, you should make sure the interior door is well-insulated. Unless your garage is heated, it can get very cold during the winter. You will want to make sure the cold air is not getting into your house and driving up your heating bills.

You should also make sure that the car doors are weatherproofed. Flood vents can help with rain in the warmer months but will not protect against snow very well. You might want to consider making sure the car doors are fully sealed instead.

Keep the Car Doors From Getting Stuck

Perhaps the one downside of parking in a garage during the winter is that your car might get stuck if the doors freeze shut. You will need a plan for getting your car out if this happens. Installing a heater in your garage can prevent the door from freezing shut. However, it is important to follow space heater safety rules. Lubricating the moving parts frequently can also keep things working in cold temperatures. Waxing or replacing the weatherstripping may keep ice from sticking. During the winter, periodically opening and closing the doors can help to prevent freezing.

Add Insulation

One of the best ways to winterize your garage is to add insulation. Insulation can help keep the ambient temperature inside your garage warmer, allowing for more year-round usage. This is especially helpful if you use your garage as a space for working on projects instead of just as a place to park your car.

Use a Weatherproof Coating

A weatherproof coating can be added to the outside of your garage and to the floor. This helps prevent damage from snow melting and protects the entire structure during major storms.

Turning a Garage Into a Housing Unit

November 13, 2024/in Custom Garages/by Blue Sky Builders

With the current housing crisis, people are turning to creative solutions. Some homeowners have begun renting out spaces like their basements, mother-in-law suites, or even their garages. Extended families are often living together – but still want some privacy from each other. If you are considering using your garage as a living space, it is important to understand what actually needs to be done to convert a garage into a housing unit. Exactly what needs to be done depends on how you will be using your converted garage. If you are simply turning an attached garage into an extra bedroom for a family member, there is less to be done than if you were converting a detached garage into an apartment to rent out. An experienced Chicago, IL garage building company can help you plan and carry out your conversion project.

Getting the Permits You Need

If you intend to start using your garage as a housing unit, you will likely need permits to have work done. You may need to ensure that your unit will not be in violation of any housing codes or other municipal laws regarding accessory dwellings. An experienced garage builder can help ensure that you are in compliance with all relevant codes.

Turning an Attached Garage Into a Room

Converting an attached garage into a bedroom or extra living space can be a great way to increase the value of your home and give your family more room to spread out. A few things you will need to have done include:

  • Insulation and weather-proofing – You will likely want to have the garage doors well-sealed and insulated against harsh winter weather. You may also want to finish the interior walls to help insulate the garage and make it feel more like a room in your house.
  • Heating and cooling – You will need to make sure you have a way to adequately heat and cool the unit if someone will be staying in it.
  • Flooring – Installing flooring, even linoleum or inexpensive carpeting, will make the garage feel like a normal room.

Turning a Garage Into a New Housing Unit

If you intend for your garage to become an independent housing unit you could rent out or move a loved one into, you may have a sizeable project on your hands. Installing proper plumbing is often a major hurdle, as this can be an expensive and involved project. You might need multiple types of professionals, including garage builders, plumbers, and electricians, to get your detached garage up to code before someone can move in.

How to Prevent Water Damage in a Garage

November 5, 2024/in Custom Garages/by Blue Sky Builders

How to Prevent Water Damage in a GarageWhether you are building a new garage from scratch or thinking of making some repairs to your current garage so it stays in good shape, preventing water damage should be high on your priority list. The Chicago area has seen a lot of rain this year and quite a few people have experienced flooding on their property. Now that the rainy season is largely over for this year, now would be an excellent time to take steps to prevent water damage for the next one. Our experienced Chicago, IL garage building and repair experts can assess your property and see what measures you should take to prevent water damage in your garage.

Repair Your Garage Door Seals

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to prevent water damage to your garage is to maintain your garage door seals. Making sure your garage doors seal tightly can prevent water from seeping into your garage during the next heavy rainfall. This is especially important if your garage is at the bottom of a sloping driveway.

Control The Humidity

Water damage can also happen when the humidity levels inside a garage get too high. It is important to have some measures in place to allow dry air to flow and moisture to evaporate. Something as simple as installing windows that can be left open a crack without compromising security can go a long way to reducing the likelihood of mold forming. Other solutions include installing a ventilation system or a skylight to allow direct sunlight in.

Install Flood Vents

Flood vents can allow water to pass through your garage without causing more damage to the doors or walls. They can open automatically when flood waters hit them, so water flows through the garage instead of damaging the door and causing a sudden rush of water when it breaks.

Repair Cracks and Leaks Promptly

If you notice cracks in the sides or floors of your garage, you should begin planning to make repairs immediately. The longer you let a crack or leak go, the harder it can be to fix when you get around to it. Cracked walls can have water or black mold build up inside them, which might cause structural damage that could result in a much bigger repair.

Five Ways to Make a Garage More Energy Efficient | Illinois

Five Ways to Make a Garage More Energy Efficient | IllinoisWhether you’re interested in a more eco-friendly lifestyle or just looking to cut down on electricity bills, investing in an energy-efficient garage is a net positive for your home. Here are some insights from our Chicago garage-building and repair experts on easy fixes to garage energy consumption.

Add Insulation to Your Garage Door

If your attached garage is not properly insulated, it will take more energy to regulate the temperature in the rest of the house. To determine the amount of insulation required, garage experts will refer to the ‘R-value,’ a measure of any insulation’s resistance to flowing heat. Generally, you’ll want to keep the R-value at 7 or above.

There are a variety of ways to protect your garage door against the elements. Foam panels are a popular choice, since materials like polystyrene can be bought in bulk and cut to fit the exact dimensions of your garage door.

Locate and Seal Gaps

Even the smallest gaps in your garage can let in outside air, which will put a strain on your energy consumption. Caulk and spray foam are practical solutions for filling in tiny cracks. A good rule of thumb to determine whether the garage is adequately sealed is if you can see daylight coming in through between the door and the floor. If so, you may need a new garage door seal, as the rubber or vinyl these seals are made of can deteriorate over time. The garage repair experts at Blue Sky Builders, Inc. can assist with installation and identify any other drafty entry points that you may have overlooked.

Monitor Your Appliances

If you use your garage for other purposes than storing your car, keep in mind that anything plugged into an outlet will ramp up your energy consumption. For instance, a TV plugged into a garage living space still uses energy even while it’s turned off. You might also consider replacing the lights inside your garage with more eco-friendly fixtures, such as LED light strips.

Patch Up Your Windows

Your garage windows might be contributing more to your insulation problems than you realize. Air can seep into the area around your windows, which is equally problematic in Chicago’s chilly winters and sweltering summers. A quick fix to this problem is weatherstripping, a way of sealing potential openings around a window pane, often with vinyl or adhesive foam. Feeling a draft around a closed window is a solid indicator that the weatherstripping needs to be replaced.

Check Your Floors

In the winter, cracks and dents in your garage floor can sabotage your heating efforts. To remedy this, you’ll need to seal the cracks with epoxy, polyurethane, or caulk. A repair expert can get a good look at your floor and help you settle on the most efficient option.
